An upgrade to Verizon's best-selling VX6000, the LG VX6100 carries forward the "camera phones for everyone" torch, offering a compelling mix of features at a low price.
The sleek, silvery VX6100 improves on its likable predecessor in nearly every way. It keeps the VX6000's easy-to-hold oval body and its 1.8-inch (128-by-160) color screen. But the internal screen is brighter than the VX6000's, and the external display is now a real display, a four-level gray scale screen that can double as a camera viewfinder for self-portraits. The camera has a sliding lens cover and an LED flash. And the VX6100 is easier to use than any other LG camera phone; finally, you can boot up the camera in one click without going through a menu.
Aside from camera enhancements, LG also made other improvements. The buttons are now domed a bit, so they're easier to press. The VX6100 also introduces a speakerphone and speaker-independent voice dialing, which means anyone can voice dial. The feature worked well in our testing, and we especially liked the "driving mode" that easily lets you turn voice dial on during your commute.
Both the speaker and speakerphone are loud enough; we consider the audio quality good, rather than exceptional. Battery life (3 hours 30 minutes) was average for such a phone. We were happy to see the phone has an analog band, which lets it connect in rural areas where all-digital phones, like the LG VX6000 and VX7000, lose their signal.
The VGA still camera is nothing special in terms of picture quality, though we like the movable lens cap. Photos had good color balance in our simulated daylight lab tests, and low-light photos were fortunately free of the horrendous color noise seen on the VX6000. The phone can store up to 60 pictures.
You can download games and ringtones from Verizon and send and receive text and picture messages.
If you're looking for an inexpensive camera phone on the Verizon network, the LG VX6100 is a sleek and reliable choice.
